[Tau] Monday Night Batrep

FU Spaces Marines.... FU!
Tonights game did not go well against Space Wolves.

1750 Annihilation, standard set up.

I was using my normal list against a new 1750 list from Dave. It was very anti Tau and anti Dark Eldar.
Dave's normal 1750 list went up against DE on Friday and the game was ended on turn 3. After getting shot of the table he re-wrote a new army. It could have been a close game but my shooting was woeful, in all honesty my guys couldn't have even shot themselves if they tried tonight.

I faced basically 50 Tactical Marines, 4 Rhino's and 3 Squads of Longfangs.  My army list only had 6 Plasma Rifles and 5 Railguns (2 lost on turn 1 to Jaws of the OP STUPID WOLF)
I stole initiative and the game was there for the taking. 5 Railguns (3 twin-linked) and 20 Missile Pod shots from 10 suits (3 twin-linked) = 1 tank destroyed and 1 Longfang Sergent.  After that abysmal shooting I deserved all I got and the match just went down hill from there. I simply didn't have enough weight of fire to focus down a unit at a time and the Longfangs were causing chaos to any suits out the open or visible.
I was pretty much tabled, only 2 Fireknives were left and as we went to turn 5 I ended the pain.

Points to take from the match:
1. Focus fire. I was trying to shoot too much and whilst I was causing wounds to multiple units I could have wiped out 1 and put another at half strength. Even 3 Space Marines will happily mess up most of my army if the get in melee range.
2. In a world of Space Marines, Space Marines and more Space Marines... Fireknives are essential. I'm giving serious though to rolling with 3 units of them rather than 2 and a Deathrain team. (Usually they're transport killers but the Deathrains ain't been too hot recently)
3.  Add your commander to a squad, don't let a unit of Longfangs pick him off.
4. Kroot are squishy. Oh my god are they squishy. I just can't get over "You've got xxxx armour saves dude" as you pick your xxxx Kroot off the table, cursing their stupid loincloths.

Ouchie, it looks like you faced one of those infantry spammers. Highly effective as a marine build, indeed...

Though I am glad you learnt something out of the ordeal;
1:Yes, focusing fire is ESSENTIAL, as correct targeting priority can save you from those pesky close combatants.
2:Fireknives are delicious, and I would never play at an above 1500 PT level without them; although 2 units á 3 should be enough, I think. No need to add even more. You still need versatility after all!
3:I do not know if I should agree, but at 1750, I say go for it.
4:They're squishy, but they're cute cute cuuuute! Problem is survivability, and I've never really agreed on having them as a flesh wall, a speed bump for the foe. Just my opinion here, but I'd like to hear a quick recap of your argumentation as to how to use them and why you do.

Here's my argument against Kroot.

First, before I get started a caveat; I've never played Space Wolves. I have played and beat a lot of MEQ.

I love FireKnives. Plasma is made of awesome. However, the painfully average BS skill means you miss unless you twin link. TL Plasma is expensive. The alternative is Pathfinders to bump the BS for the unit.

For reliable +1 BS you need 2 or 3 Pathfinders. And with minimum group size + Transport you're paying enough to field a Crisis Suit Team.

The Crisis Suit Team can get 6 TL missile attacks cheaply. Volume of Fire is important.

Tau have two things going for them: Range and TwinLinking. Use and abuse it well. At somepoint I'll blog about my strat and how it works for MEQ killing.

Yeah, it sucks when you're getting out-shot by space wolves.3 squads of long fangs means lots of dead crisis suits.
