Army work in progress pics 12/10/2010

Von'Ryn Cadre Deathrains

Ok here is the latest pictures of what I'm working on. I tend to jump from unit to unit to keep my interest and attention as I can get bored easily. I'll work by doing something like base coating 1 unit, then drybrushing another one next, then switching to inking another one.  At the moment I've only really got 1 full squad painted, everything else is in base coat or undercoat stages whilst I've been re-teaching myself how to paint after 5 years.  I've tried to add some interesting stuff after the break.

I'll be putting up a guide for my Firewarriors (dubbed the Red Caps) I'm totally hyped about how they've came out after using the Bolter and Chainsword Army Painter to help me plan a new scheme.  The whole army will be grey and red, troops use Codex Grey for their base whilst the Crisis Suits use the darker Adeptus Battlegrey Foundation.
These guys were a test batch, I undercoated in black and then painted them all Codex Grey. I then washed with Badab Black and did some rough highlighting with Codex Grey again.  The helms and shoulders were Undercoated Skull White, then painted Blood Red, line inked with Badab Black and any mess was layered up with Blood Red.  Going forward to the 2nd squad they've been assembled with arms and backpacks attached already.

Here is my 2nd Deathrain Team.
These guys have been posed to look like they're bracing themselves for taking some long range shots.
I spray paint with a white base so that when I come to doing the red I'm not spending time doing hour after hour of white coats.  I do all the metal area's with Boltgun Metal and from there do a Foundation basecoat (just 1 thin layer) The model then gets a Badab Black wash and then drybrushed with the Foundation again.
For the red I just paint Blood Red straight onto the white, then ink the lines with the black and tidy up any mess.

Next is my Firestorm team (Heavy Arms!)
These guys were painted at the same time as my 1st Deathrain Squad. It was fun to do but sadly they're totally out of sync with the rest of how my army looks.  It's the kind of thing where people will say "Why are they a different colour?" I've still to finish them off (let me just say, painting white is a pain in the rear).  They got they typical prep of Skull White undercoat and then Boltgun Metal for the exposed areas. I then with a small brush carefully applied ink to where I wanted lines/edges to show and corrected any spills with about 4/5 coats of white. Blood Red and Blazing Orange were then applied, washed and touched up. They still need to be highlighted and finished off but will do for now.
The guy with the blue face on the right was actually done differently, I tried to drybrush the white after inking but it didn't look right. The  shadows and lines ended up too rough and messy. He was the 1st one done.

Finally I have my new Command Team.
You might notice the 2 Shas'vre as the Heatwave Forge brothers! They have been refitted as a Fireknife configuration to support Commander Longshot.  These guy will be painted like everyone else except their contrast colour will be Golden Yellow instead of Blood Red.
Commander Longshot uses some Forgeworld bits. His knees and elbows are actually pinned through to help with assembly and posing.  I cut down his backpack and gave him a Spine Sensor Array using spare bits for my Devilfish Sprues.

As ever, feedback and comments appreciated, sorry if the post is a bit long or the pictures a bit big.

Looks nice Gredus. Only suggestions would be to make the red brighter and mold over the jetpack line on that middle battlesuit in pic 5.

Just me being pedantic though. Keep it up!

Looking sharp! I especially love how the Firestorm suits look, and I'm jealous of your smooth priming. Mine never comes out looking that good, thanks to Missouri and its accursed summer humidity.

Keep up the good work!

I am positively impressed with the imagery you have provided; Your crisis suits are how they should be: Clean, sleek, and utilitaristic.

I do have a question. Could you perhaps tell me (or your readers) how to cut around the XV8 jump packs to stick them together like your commander's miniature?

I would be thankful for such a thing.

Looks sharp, did you magnet them in or glue?

Thanks for the comments guys.

@ Harman - I'll try to get a guide for the backpack this weekend.

@ Retired - The weapons are all glued in, if I need more suits I just buy them, but will probably be using magnets ony my next suits. I knew i'd always want 2 Deathrains squads so that's why I was ok with glueing them.

@ Nocker - I prime my models in a box with light layers and only do it outside when there is 0 wind.
